イギリス人作家、Elizabeth Hanburyのデビュー作。。
TPWは、最近の典型的なリージェンシーロマンスとはちょっと作風が異なり、G. Heyer風にwittyな会話をメインにストーリーが展開していきます。
Nicola Cornickが“A Regency writer of real skill, depth, wit and charm”とコメントしていますが、納得です。英国人作家らしく、19世紀のイギリスの雰囲気をよく醸し出していたと思います。特に前半は、まるでコスチュームドラマを観ているような感覚で読み進みました。
このままいけば★五つ？！と思いましたが、中盤あたりから、ストーリーの主軸がよくわからなくなって、ちょっぴりメロドラマ色が濃くなってしまったかな…。それでもダイアログの上手さ、強引さを全く感じさせない主人公二人のロマンスがとても良かったので、どんどんページをめくらずにはいられませんでした。
ヒーローのタイプやロマンティックなシーンも私の好みに合っていたし、知性や共感能力に欠ける脇役たちの言動も可笑しく、とても楽しませてもらった作品です。
